Blackpoint/Greenpoint

In the Black Point-Green Point neighborhood of Novato, hilly terrain rises out of the marshland where the Petaluma River and Novato Creek enter the San Pablo Bay.  It is an unincorporated, rural community on the northeastern edge of the city, with large lots perfect for horses and viticulture; much of the area is zoned for agricultural use.  Many homes dotting the oak-shaded hillsides of Black Point and Green Point have lovely views of the water.  Some homes along the estuary have boat launches connected to the backyard by long causeways.

Surrounded as it is by the bay, the river, and marshland (which cannot be built on), the Black Point and Green Point area will always be rural.  According to the Novato General Plan, this area will remain very low density with one building to every one or five acres, and large agricultural tracts bordering the wetlands.

This area is home to a multitude of birds and wildlife, including the endangered California Clapper Rail.  In the adjacent Bahia neighborhood, the Bahia Marsh Restoration Project is underway.  The proposed project will breach or lower levees with connections to the Petaluma River in order to reintroduce tidal action to the 645 acres of former farmland, and reintroduce the interface of the unique blue oak woodlands and tidal marsh.

At the Petaluma River, right under the Highway 37 overpass bridge, is one of the county's two public boat launches, the Black Point Boat Launch.  Recently overhauled, this one-acre site contains parking and a two-lane ramp for boat launching onto the mouth of the Petaluma River.

Near the boat launch you can see another interesting feature, the old swing bridge on the railroad line.  Now permanently in the open position, this hundred year old bridge pivots side to side to allow river traffic through.  It will become operational if the railroad starts carrying freight again, which may happen in the next year or two.

The prestigious Stonetree Golf Club is located in this neighborhood, directly off of Highway 37.  The Club includes a beautifully laid out, 18-hole, regulation length golf course surrounded by preserved natural habitat.  The course, which provides players of all skill levels with a quality experience, has strategic and aesthetic elements designed on-site to showcase the existing environment.  At Stonetree you'll also find a perfect venue for corporate or casual events and weddings, with ideal facilities and a lively, professional staff.

For all that Black Point seems to be out in the country, it is very convenient to both Highway 37 and 101, and is a quick ten minutes away from downtown Novato.
